Exceeds expectations, great for the price,
This is at least a $1200 laptop, for $850, when I bought it. I dunno, but that’s just indicative of a great deal to begin with.
They really do mean that it gets 10hr of battery life. I got 6 hours of continuous, hard use constantly downloading games on Steam with brightness and performance set to max. With moderate use, I expect at least 9 hours, possibly up to 12. It’s spectacular. The screen is crisp and bright, and very large. The numpad is also a great plus over smaller laptops; I use it a lot. It’s sleek, sturdy, and even though it’s 3″ larger in the diagonal than my old Toshiba Tecra M7, it weighs less. The graphics card works perfectly fine in mine, and after removing bloatware (moderate amount, but easy to remove) and installing several Windows updates, it runs like a dream.
The touchpad has a lot of friction. It’s a matte finish, which means your finger doesn’t move as smoothly as on a macbook’s glossy touchpad. The buttons for clicking aren’t integrated into the touchpad, which is good, but they’re hard to click at times and a little finicky. The touchpad is responsive, but can get confused easily if you use your left hand to click and your right to move the mouse or vise versa; the two electromagnetic sources can trigger the multitouch when you don’t want it. Webcam resolution is smallish but passable. If you don’t like island keys (they’re just blocks, not the beveled ones like older laptops; think Macbook keyboard) then this keyboard probably won’t do well for you. I’d go for something like Lenovo, MSI, or Toshiba if you want beveled keys, which are easier to type on for longer periods of time and generally preferred by the programmers where I work over Macbook-style keyboards like this HP has. It’s not bad, and typing works well, but I do sometimes miss my Toshiba’s keyboard.
The case is sturdy and while fingerprint resistant, still needs some TLC to keep it factory clean. Finger print sensor is a little touchy (sorry about the pun there…) but generally works ok. Software works well. MS Office is just a trial; either buy it or install a previous version. Don’t use the provided Norton suite unless you’re a diehard Norton fanatic; Avast runs the best out of the programs I’ve tested (Norton, Trend Micro, MacAfee, and Avast) by using the least processor power and running much leaner in the background than its competitors. It’s also free.
Overall, a great bang for your buck. The same specs in an Aleinware case or even a Macbook would cost you almost double or triple the price. HP knows what they’re doing here. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking in this price range for the best deal they can get.
Edit: Twenty days later, I’ve found a few bugs but remain quite happy with the laptop. And as an IT professional, it takes a lot to make me happy with a computer. It didn’t take long to adjust to the keyboard, and typing on my old Toshiba actually feels a bit odd now. I’d recommend getting a wireless mouse for it; I got a small Microsoft Bluetrack mouse with the laptop but it took a few more days to arrive, and when it did, it was a lot easier to use the laptop. You can also turn off the touchpad by double-tapping it in the upper left on that small white rectangle. Multitouch is still really weird, so I generally just use a mouse. You can set the webcam resolution for up to 1280px wide, which on a fast connection looks quite beautiful on the other person’s end.
The case is covered with fingerprints and skin oils, but that’s unavoidable on pretty much any laptop used a lot. I use this more than my high-powered gaming desktop now, mainly because it’s got more computer in it. My desktop has the better graphics card, but this laptop has a better processor. Speaking of the graphics card, it functions like an onboard Intel HD graphics card. Since it’s actually an AMD, it’s a litle better than that, but it struggles to render Minecraft. Team Fortress 2, Left for Dead, and Half-Life all run fine, though. If you game a lot, this laptop probably isn’t your best option, but it’s better than the majority of other laptops in this range. I’d recommend getting a CoolerMaster fan pad for it; they sell a wonderful one made from 1/16″ steel with moveable fans that works very well with this laptop.
The audio works fine for the most part, but I generally keep it on mute since I don’t really watch videos or listen to music much. It has two speaker ports and one mic port, and the software that controls which does which and whatnot is a little buggy. Sometimes I don’t have to unmute the speakers to get audio through my headset, sometimes it sends system/game sounds through my speakers and the voice chat with other gamers through my headset, sometimes it forgets to mute the speakers even though the keyboard indicator says they’re muted, sometimes it’ll send the audio through the…

|Great…. but currently broken (now fixed =]),
edit: the problem has been mostly fixed as of august 1st! If you bought a laptop that doesn’t have the fix, update your bios off of the hp site.
This laptop is broken. Specifically, it has bad video drivers that prevent the Radeon graphics card from ever turning on (edit: I now know this problem only affects opengl programs/games). It’s a great laptop otherwise, but until this problem is fixed its not worth the price. I’ve heard this problem applies to most of the recent hp laptops that have switchable graphics.

|Excellant Deal,
I bought this product a few days ago and as expected everything was top notch. I haven’t had a single problem the laptop, and it runs much smoother than any computer that I have ever owned. This laptop didn’t only meet the expectations that I had for it after reading its specs, but it blew them away with its incredibly clear sound system(even has a sound bar above they keyboard meaning the sound isn’t muffled under the computer like in many laptops). I have already put my time in to setting this computer up and have been blown away by every aspect. I have experimented with newer games such as starcraft 2 and have seen the utmost quality produced by the graphics card. For the price of this laptop it delivers far more than one would ever expect. when HP designed this model they really did their best work; every detail of this computer is brilliantly designed. between the sound system even coming with a small sub-woofer, the outstanding graphics card, the giant hard drive, and the 10 hour battery life this computer really can not be topped easily. This computer is definitely the best out there for this price range.
